What is Alcohol Detox?
Prolonged heavy drinking can lead to a dependency on alcohol. This dependency occurs because the alcohol disrupts the brain’s neurotransmitters, the brain chemicals that actually transmit messages to and from the brain. The overconsumption of alcohol over a long period of time can suppress the activity of glutamate. This is the specific neurotransmitter that produces feelings of excitability in a person. This leads to the glutamate system continuously functioning at a higher level to maintain equilibrium.
When a heavy drinker suddenly stops or significantly reduces their alcohol consumption, these neurotransmitters that were previously suppressed by alcohol are no longer suppressed. This causes them to rebound, resulting in “brain hyperexcitability.” This leads to anxiety, agitation, irritability, tremors and even seizures. Alcohol detox programs have been created to help those suffering from alcoholism safely detox. Angels of Victory is a special group that offers both an in-house detox program and a program to detox from alcohol at home.
Are there Alcohol Withdrawal Symptoms?
Alcohol withdrawal syndrome is a potentially life-threatening condition that occurs in individuals who have drank heavily for weeks, months, or even years then stop or significantly reduce their normal alcohol consumption. Minor withdrawal symptoms will usually appear 6 to 12 hours after the last drink. This first stage features symptoms like:
- Shaky hands
- Mild anxiety
Between 12 and 24 hours, some patients may experience auditory, visual or tactile hallucinations. This symptom usually ends within 48 hours. In severe cases, an individual can experience withdrawal seizures. This symptom usually strikes between 24 and 48 hours after the last drink. However, seizures can appear as early as two hours after the last drink. The risk of having a seizure is higher in patients who have previously undergone multiple alcohol detoxifications.
Delirium tremens (DTs) usually begin between 48 and 72 hours after the last drink. Symptoms of DTs will usually peak at 5 days and can include:
- Severe anxiety
- Racing and irregular heartbeat
- Low-grade fever
- Hallucinations (primarily visual) which cannot be distinguished from reality
- Profuse sweating
- High blood pressure
- Severe tremors
The death rate from DTs is estimated to range from 1 percent to 5 percent. Because alcohol withdrawal symptoms can be life-threatening and rapidly worsen as time goes on, it is extremely important that anyone going through detox should seek medical attention. This is true even if the symptoms seem mild. Appropriate alcohol withdrawal treatments will greatly reduce your risk of exhibiting withdrawal seizures or life-threatening DTs.
